According to Adaline Going Johnson's letter to Rhoda Street dated Feb 13, 1893 Indianapolis, and transcribed by Perry Jay Stearns, she and Lester were married on May 18, 1836 at the home of Mr. Hosner where Adaline was boarding. "Mrs. Hosmer was an old school teacher of mine in St. Johnsbury".
It is not entirely certain that they were married in Boston (where the Hosner's lived) or in St. Johnsbury where Lester's parents lived and where other sources say they were married.

By 1659 William, Sr., had taken as his second wife a widow, Mrs. Anne Bingham, variously recorded by earlier writers as Anne Stenton Bingham, or as Anne Stetson Bingham. She was the widow of Thomas Bingham, they having been married 6 July 1631 in Sheffield, England. A record in the "Parish Register of Sheffield, cy York, Part 1, Baptisms and Marriages, 1560 to1634-5", p. 247, under the year 1631, is that of the marriage of "Tho'Bingham et Anna FFenton", the F being repeated in FFenton, just as L is repeated in Lloyd up to the present time. The same book has a complete index with many Binghams, many Fentons, but not a single Stenton. The obvious conclusion is that William Backus had a second wife named Ann Fenton Bingham, not Anne Stenton Bingham. Thomas Bingham and Anne Fenton had a son Thomas, recorded in Saybrook, Connecticut, also Norwich, and later Windham, where he was known as Thomas, Sr. Two children of this stepson of William Backus, Sr., later married grandchildren of William. | Family: F236

Capt. James Rutherford was a Scot who served in the Netherlands, a resident of Utricht. The Dutch have records showing a Jheemes Rutherford marrying Maragreta Gledstein. After searching for years for a Dutch family named Gledstein, finally among the Borders people of Scotland there was found proof that Rutherfords intermarried very frenquently with the Gledstaines (Gladstones). The Gladstones are another Borders family of Scotland. | Family: F274
