      Possible father: John Matthews and Olive Royce.
      Bela Royce son lived in St. Johnsbury. His son, Luther, died in 1880.
      Mary Goodwin says in letter that she attended a funeral of a Mr. Matthews in St. Johnsbury when she was about 10 years old (abt 1878) and that he was a relative.

      Note: Birth date is from Barbour Records, Bristol, Connecticut assuming she is daughter of John Mathews.

      I was transcribing some additional letters of Lester Rice to Adaline Going I received from the WHS which were not included in the transcriptions done by my grandfather Perry Stearns. In them I found several things of interest:

      1) Lester refers to his "aunt Rhoda" who lives in St. Johnsbury and his "aunt Harwood" who lives in Lynn, Mass. I did some checking on Ancestry and discovered that Rhoda Mathews, daughter of John Mathews and Olive (Cloe) Roys of Bristol, CT (Barbour records) married John Williamson and lived in St. Johnsbury. She had one son, Robert H Williamson. They are present in the 1840 census in St. Johnsbury under Roberts name. Rhoda is a sister of one Ellen Mathews according to the Barbour records (ancestry) and a brother to Bela and John P Mathews who were parties to several of the Abel M Rice land records of Claremont. I know John P Mathews is the same because his wife Cynthia was mentioned in the land records when she gave up her dower. He married Cynthia Bradley.

      I am now convinced more than ever that Ellen was the daughter of John Mathews and Olive Roys aka Cloe (sister of Hezekiah) and would have been Abel M Rice's 1st cousin. I guess that marrying first cousins was not considered unacceptable back in those days. [4, 10]
